David Ellinghaus
Head Coach

Head coach David Ellinghaus joined the Marlins in 1990 after his graduation from Boston College.  After his 1993 graduation from Fordham University’s School of Law, David decided to forgo a career in law for one as a teacher.  It was then that David decided to continue coaching on a permanent basis.  The rest is history as David is now in his 17th season with the Marlins determined to see the team improve on its past success as it strives to reach new heights.

In addition to coaching the Marlins, David is a former coach of the Bedford Village Swim Team (1984-1991) and was coach of the girls’ varsity swim team at Fox Lane High School (where he graduated in 1986) from 1994-2000.  For his efforts, David has earned two “Coach of the Year” honors.  In 1993, Metropolitan Swimming honored him as their “Age Group Coach of the Year.”  Following the 1994 girls high school season, David was named the “Gannett Newspapers Coach of the Year.”

In addition to coaching, David is in his 12th year teaching at the French American School of New York.  He teaches Social Studies to 6th, 8th, and 9th graders, and is the faculty advisor to the school’s Student Government.  David also serves on the Board of Directors of Metropolitan Swimming as head of Technical Planning.  In 2002, United States Swimming awarded David its “Outstanding Service Award,” sponsored by the Phillips Petroleum Company, for his work within the Metropolitan Swimming community.  During the summer, in addition to coaching the Marlins, David “relaxes” by running the swim program at Soundview Sports Camp.

When all is said and done, David says what makes him most proud about coaching the Marlins are the outstanding young men and women that graduate from the program each year, and to know that the Marlins Swim Team was a key element in their development.

After the 2005-2006 season that saw Marlins achieve unprecedented success, David can only imagine the new heights the team is capable of reaching in 2006-2007. He hopes that each individual swimmer will attain his/her personal goals and that the team will continue to be one of the premier programs in Metropolitan Swimming and beyond. With the new Quadrennial upon us, David wonders which current Marlins will be on deck at the Olympic Trials in 2008.

David is looking forward to another great season as the team aims for its 8th straight Boys & Girls Clubs National Championship.  Go Marlins!
