Polhill Sets Records At Eastern Zones The USA-Swimming Eastern Zone All-stars Long Course Swimming Championships took place recently at the University of Pittsburgh's Joe C. Trees' Pool. Ali Polhill, a swimmer on the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins, set three team records at the four-day meet. The Eastern Zone is made up of all teams from the following zones: New England, Maine, Niagara, Adirondack, Connecticut, Metropolitan, New Jersey, Middle Atlantic, Potomac Valley, Allegheny Mountains, Maryland and Virginia. The Metropolitan team finished in third place overall, but in second place for female scores. Ali Polhill, of Brewster, was a member of the Metropolitan Team. She finished third in the 10-under girls 50 meter butterfly with a Marlins team record time of 35.01L and sixth in the 100 fly (1:18.00L -- team record). Ali swam to personal best times in the 200 freestyle (2:38.22L), 400 free (5:25.46L -- team record), and 50 backstroke (38.49L). She also swam the 50 free (33.09L). Ali was part of three Metropolitan winning relays: the 10-under girls 200 & 400 free relays, and the 200 Medley relay. Steffi Niessl, also a resident of Brewster, swam six events at Zones. The 11-12 girls 50 back, 100 back (1:15.49L -- personal best), 200 back (2:42.32L -- personal best), 50 fly, 100 fly, and 50 free. Kazu Asaga, of Chappaqua, set a Marlins team record leading off the 11-12 boys 200 free relay (11-12 boys 50 free: 28.77L). Kazu also set a team record in the 50 fly (32.05L). He also swam the 50, 100 & 200 back, the 100 fly, and the 50 free. |

Marlins Make Waves At County Championships Bad weather and thunderstorms didn't stop many members of the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team to make waves at the 78th Annual Westchester County Swimming Association Championships. More than eleven hundred swimmers, representing 54 recreational teams, participated in this very popular event which was held recently at the Playland pool, in Rye. Two Marlins, Kim Tracey and Brad Thornton, won the High Point Awards in their respective division. Brad Thornton, of Hastings-On-Hudson, was a triple winner and scored 34 points to win the boys Overall High Point Award. Swimming for Hastings Town Pool, Brad won the 17 & Under boys 100 yd freestyle (49.78), the 100 breaststroke (1:04.25), and the 200 individual medley (2:02.70). He finished second in the 100 butterfly (53.60). Kim Tracey, of Sleepy Hollow, scored 30 points to win the girls Overall High Point Award. Swimming for her summer team of Pocantico Hills, Kim won the 12 & Under girls 50 backstroke (29.69) and the 50 breaststroke (34.63). She placed second in the 50 free and fourth in the 50 fly. Caren Guyett, of Yorktown, won the Girls First Runner-up High Point Award. Swimming for her town pool, Caren scored 29 points. She won the 14 & Under girls 100 breaststroke (1:14.71) and placed second in the 100 free and 100 back. She finished third in the 17 & Under 200 IM. Dakota Gordon, of Bedford, scored 31 points to win the Boys Second Runner-up High Point Award. Swimming for the Anita Louise Ehrman team, Dakota won the 10 & Under boys 50 free (29.33) and the 50 fly (30.20). He placed second in the 50 breaststroke and third in the 50 back. Katie Underwood, swimming for the Briarcliff Manor Swim Team, won the 10 & Under girls 50 back (33.53). She placed seventh in the 50 free. Swimming for Willowbrook, Meghan Brooks, of Somers placed second in the 50 free and fifth in the 50 back. Representing A.L.E., nine-year-old Danielle Sims, of Armonk, placed sixth in the 50 fly. Melissa Trail, of Pound Ridge, finished eight in the 50 back. Tara Flaherty, of Hastings-On-Hudson, placed third in the 14 & Under 100 fly, fourth in the 100 breaststroke, and sixth in the 100 free. Thirteen-year-old Nadine Follini, of the Torview Club, placed eighth in the 100 back. Swimming for the Pleasantville team, Jaymi Light finished seventh in the 17 & Under girls 100 breaststroke and 100 fly. Matthew Karle, swimming for Mount Kisco Memorial Pool, won the 10 & Under boys 50 breaststroke (36.99). He placed third in the 50 fly and eighth in the 50 back. Eight-year-old Aaron Blacker, of Willowbrook, finished seventh in the 10 & Under boys 50 fly. Harry Zimmerman, of Briarcliff Manor, placed sixth in the 50 breaststroke. Nick Charriez, of the Yorktown Town Pool, finished fifth in the 12 & Under boys 50 fly. Swimming for Birchwood Swim Team, Matthew Hadley of Chappaqua placed sixth in the 50 free. Swimming for his summer team A.L.E., Tristan Hastings of Somers placed second in the 14 & Under boys 100 free, 100 back, 100 breast and 100 fly. Daniel Simco, of the Pound Ridge team, placed third in the 100 back, sixth in the 100 fly and eighth in the 100 free. Anthony Simco, also of Pound Ridge, finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke and eighth in the 100 fly. The Marlins will resume practice in early September. Set Records At Summer Meets The Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins set eighteen new long course records during the month of July. Swimming at the Metropolitan Senior Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center at Eisenhower Park, Long Island, thirteen-year-old Brittany Potter, of New Fairfield, CT, set a new record in the 13-14 girls 1500 meter freestyle (19:31.06L). Her twin sister Alyssa placed seventh in the women 200 butterfly. Tristan Hastings, of Somers, finished sixth in the men's 400 individual medley, and sixth in the 100 backstroke. Caren Guyett, Sarah Guyett, Brad Thornton and Kim Tracey also participated in the competition. Five Marlins were members of the Hudson Valley Team that traveled to Buffalo to compete at the 2003 Empire State Games. Caren Guyett, of Yorktown, took the gold in the scholastic division 200 free (2:15.13L -- team record). She took the bronze in the 400 free (4:40.23L -- team record) and the 800 free (9:43.74L -- team record). Tristan Hastings won the gold medal in the scholastic division 100 backstroke (1:04.21L) and in the 200 back (2:15.53L -- team record - NAG Top 16). He earned the silver medal in the 200 IM. Yorktown's Andrew Palumbo earned bronze medals in the scholastic 100 and 200 breaststroke. He finished eighth in the 800 free. Brad Thornton, of Hastings-On-Hudson, won the men's open division 50 free (25.47L), and 100 free (55.52L). He placed second in the 100 fly (1:00.14L - team record). Leading off the 400 free relay, Brad set a team record in the 100 free (55.26L). Sarah Guyett of Yorktown finished seventh in the 200 IM, and eighth in the 100 & 200 back. Many Marlins participated in the 2003 Metropolitan Summer Junior Olympics. The three-day competition was held in the 50 meter pool at Lehman College in the Bronx. Scoring 127 points, Alyssa Potter, of New Fairfield, CT, won the 13-14 girls High Point. Alyssa placed first in the 100 fly (1:08.97L), second in the 200 fly (2:30.27L - team record), the 400 IM (5:24.76L - team record), third in the 200 breaststroke (2:57.20L - team record) and the 200 IM. Brittany Potter, who finished second overall with 125 points, placed second and set a new record in the 200 IM (2:36.09L). Brittany finished second in the 100 fly, and third in the 100 back, 200 back, and 400 IM. Steffi Niessl, of Brewster, placed second in the 11-12 girls 50 fly (31.52L - team record) and 100 fly (1:12.45L - team record). Ali Polhill, of Brewster, placed second in the 10-under girls 400 free (5:28.52L - team record). She finished third in the 50 free (32.83L - team record). Katie Underwood, of Briarcliff Manor, placed second in the 100 back (1:21.25L - team record). Leading off the medley relay, Katie also set a team record in the 50 back (38.42L). The team of Underwood, Taylor Scilufo, Polhill, and Meghan Brooks won and set a team record in the 10-under girls 200 medley relay (2:35.71L). They set a team record with a second place finish in the 400 free relay (5:10.85L). Kim Tracey, of Sleepy Hollow, won the 11-12 girls 50 back (33.78L). Island Classic Eleven team records fell recently when the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins traveled to East Meadow, Long Island. The Long Island Classic, hosted by the Long Island Aquatic Club, was held for two consecutive days at the Nassau County Aquatic Center at Eisenhower Park. Swimming in the 10-under age group, eight-year-old Will Rappaport set four new Marlins team records in the 8-under boys age group: the 50 (41.12L) and the 100 meter backstroke (1:32.15L), the 100 butterfly (1:33.56L), and the 200 individual medley (3:13.28L). Two more 8-year-old boys set Marlins records. Aaron Blacker broke the standard in the 50 fly (39.53L), and Henry Simon set the record in the 100 breaststroke (2:07.08L). Ali Polhill set three new records and was a double winner in the 10-under girls. Ali won the 50 fly (35.70L - team record), and the 100 fly (1:21.51L - team record). She placed second in the 50 breaststroke, 200 freestyle, 50 back (38.87L - team record), and 200 IM. Steffi Niessl won and set a new team record in the 11-12 girls 50 fly (31.82L). She placed second in the 50 free, 100 back, and 200 IM, and third in the 100 fly. Kim Tracey won the 11-12 girls 100 back and 200 IM. She placed second in the 100 free. Alexandra Gorki set a record in the 11-12 girls 100 breaststroke (1:25.44L). Drew Polhill won four events in the 11-12 boys age group. Drew won the 50 and 100 breaststroke, 50 fly and 200 IM. West Point The Mt. Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team traveled to West Point recently to participate in their first long course meet of the summer season. Fifteen long course team records were set at the two-day Long Course Kickoff Invitational held at the United States Military Academy's Crandall Pool. Ten-year-old Ali Polhill won five events, qualified for the Long Course Eastern Zone All-star Championships in four events, and set two team records. Ali placed first in the 10-under girls 50 meter freestyle (32.93L-ZQ-team record), 50 backstroke (39.76L-ZQ), 50 (36.64L-ZQ) & 100 butterfly (1:25.26L-ZQ- team record), and 200 individual medley. She finished second in the 100 back. Nine-year-old Taylor Scilufo won the 50 breaststroke. Taylor also placed second in the 50 & 100 free. Danielle Sims, nine, took a second place in the 50 fly while Roxy Rappaport, ten, placed second in the 50 breaststroke. Meghan Brooks placed third in the 100 free. Twelve-year-old Steffi Niessl qualified for Zones in three events and was a triple winner in the 11-12 girls division. Steffi won the 50 free (30.50L-ZQ), the 100 back (1:17.03L-ZQ), and the 50 fly (32.88L-ZQ). She placed second in the 50 back and 100 fly. Kim Tracey, also 12, was a double winner placing first in the 100 free and 50 back. She finished second in the 50 friend 200 IM, and third in the 100 back and 50 breaststroke. Eleven-year-old Alexandra Gorki set a team record and qualified for Zones with her first place finish in the 50 breaststroke (39.03L). She placed third in the 50 free and 100 fly. Fourteen-year-old Caren Guyett set four team records and qualified for Zones in all four. Caren won the 13-14 girls 200 free (2:17.73L-ZQ-Team record), the 400 free, the 200 breaststroke (2:57.77L-ZQ-Team record), and the 400 IM (5:32.97L-ZQ-Team record). She placed second in the 100 free and 200 IM (2:36.68L-ZQ-Team record). Thirteen-year-old Alyssa Potter won the 100 breaststroke and the 200 fly. She placed second in the 200 breaststroke (2:59.48L-ZQ), and third in the 100 fly and 200 IM. Twin sister Brittany Potter finished second in the 100 & 200 back, and 400 IM (5:34.44L-ZQ). She finished third in the 400 free. Competing in the 10-under boys division, eight-year-old Will Rappaport set six 8-under boys Marlins' records: 50 free (35.83L), 100 free (1:20.40L), 50 back (44.77L), 100 back (1:32.45L), 50 breaststroke (48.71L-third place), and 50 fly (40.46L-third place). Dakota Gordon won the 10-under boys 100 back. He placed second in the 50 back, 50 breaststroke, 50 fly (35.60L-team record), and 200 IM. Kazu Asaga won four events qualifying for Zones in three. Kazu placed first in the 11-12 boys 50 free (29.49L-ZQ), 100 free (1:05.89L-ZQ), 50 back (35.07L-ZQ), and 50 fly. He placed second in the 100 back and 100 fly. Drew Polhill won five events. Drew took first in the 100 back, 50 and 100 breaststroke, 100 fly, and 200 IM. He placed second in the 50 back. Tristan Hastings was a triple winner in the 13-14 boys division. Tristan won the 200 back (2:23.24L-ZQ-team record), the 100 breaststroke (1:18.46L-ZQ), and the 200 IM (2:23.13L-ZQ). Thirteen-year-old Chris Luboja won the 100 back and placed third in the 200 breaststroke. Dylan Morris, also 13, won the 200 breaststroke and placed third in the 200 free and 100 breaststroke. Daniel Simco finished second in the 200 back and 100 breaststroke, and third in the 200 IM. Clifton Cazes won the senior boys division 100 breaststroke (1:13.80L-ZQ). |

Boys & Girls Clubs Nationals For seventeen consecutive years, Sarasota, Florida, was the place to be in April for the Boys & Girls Clubs swimmers in America. This year, the 2003 Speedo Boys & Girls Clubs National Swimming Championship was held up the coast in St. Petersburg, Florida. The change of venue didn't seem to affect the record setting number of 168 Marlins that traveled south for the occasion. The Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester swimmers won their fourth consecutive National title with an impressive score of 12,212 points. The meet host, Carrollwood Village Swim Team of Tampa, Florida, finished second with 4,565.50 points. The Clifton Seahawks, of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Clifton, New Jersey, placed third with 1,614 points. Nine High Point winners led the Marlins. Drew Polhill, Caren Guyett and Tristan Hastings won all their events and scored the maximum of 160 points. Drew Polhill won the first place High Point Award in the 11-12 boys division. He placed first in the 500 yd freestyle (5:39.44), 100 backstroke (1:06.51), 50 breaststroke (33.45), 100 breaststroke (1:11.00), 50 butterfly (27.96), 100 fly (1:04.19), 100 Individual Medley (1:04.15), and 200 IM (2:21.06). Teammate Kazu Asaga scored 145 points to win the second place high Point Award. Kazu won the 11-12 boys 50 free (26.39), 100 free (57.64), 200 free (2:09.93), and 50 back (30.48). The team of D. Polhill, Evan Palumbo, James Karle, and Asaga won the 200 free relay (1:50.96) and the 200 medley relay (2:00.30). Caren Guyett won the first place High Point Award in the 13-14 girls division. She placed first in the 100 free (55.91), 200 free (1:56.81), 500 free (5:13.27), 1650 free (17:59.14), 100 breaststroke (1:10.57), 200 breaststroke (2:30.44), 200 IM (2:13.80) and 400 IM (4:39.57). Brittany Potter scored 118 points to win the third place High Point Award. The team of C. Guyett, Michelle Lian, Roxy Wacyk, and Tara Flaherty won the 200 free relay (1:46.00). Guyett, Flaherty, B. Potter, and Lian won the 200 medley relay (1:58.82). Tristan Hastings dominated the 13-14 boys and won the first place High Point Award. Tristan won the 50 free (23.68), 100 free (50.42), 200 free (1:49.74), 500 free (4:58.24), 200 back (1:59.05 - meet record), 200 breaststroke (2:18.02), 200 IM (2:01.96) and 400 IM (4:26.12). Daniel Simco scored 132 points to earn the third place High Point Award. Daniel placed first in the 100 back (57.31), 100 breaststroke (1:09.07), and 100 fly (57.80). D. Simco, Hastings, Anthony Simco, and Adam Powell won the 200 medley relay (1:49.34). Will Rappaport scored 153 points to win the 8-under boys High Point Award. Will placed first in the 50 free (32.07), 100 free (1:11.02), 25 back (17.63 - meet record), 50 back (36.17 - meet record), 50 fly (35.34), and 100 IM (1:18.34). Seven-year-old Aaron Blacker received the second place High Point Award. Aaron scored 140 points and won the 25 breaststroke (21.50), 50 breaststroke (45.71), and 25 fly (16.10). Danny Caiola scored 139 points and took the third place High Point Award. Danny won the 25 free (15.12). The team of Rappaport, Blacker, Caiola, and Alex Rosen won the 100 free relay (1:02.97 - meet record). The same quartet won the 100 medley relay (1:12.50 - meet record). Ali Polhill scored 148 points on her way to win the 9-10 girls first place High Point Award. Ali won the 50 free (28.87), 100 free (1:03.14), 50 fly (31.60), and 100 fly (1:13.53). Maddy Berkman scored 127 points and won the third place High Point Award. The team of Berkman, Taylor Scilufo, Katie Underwood and Polhill won the 200 free relay (2:03.88). Underwood, Sabine Holmes, Polhill and Berkman won the 200 medley relay (2:18.39). John Carr scored 146 points in the 9-10 boys age group and won the first place High Point Award. John placed first in the 50 free (29.64), 100 free (1:04.38), 200 free (2:20.93), and 50 back (34.41). Dakota Gordon won the second place High Point Award (137 points). Dakota placed first in the 500 free (6:18.73), 100 back (1:14.56), 50 fly (32.48), 100 fly (1:13.53), 100 IM (1:15.44) and 200 IM (2:37.90). Matthew Karle scored 136 points and won the third place High Point Award. Matthew placed first in the 50 breaststroke (37.78) and 100 breaststroke (1:22.13). Gordon, M. Karle, Justin Potter and J. Carr won the 200 free (2:04.83) and 200 medley relays (2:21.01). Kim Tracey scored 153 points to win the 11-12 girls High Point Award. Kim had victories in the 50 free (26.81), 100 free (58.23), 200 free (2:11.04), 50 back (30.41), 100 back (1:04.81), and 200 IM (2:24.71). Steffi Niessl received the second place High Point Award (139.50 points) Steffi placed first in the 50 fly (29.15) and 100 fly (1:08.02). Alexandra Gorki won the 50 breaststroke (35.04), and 100 breaststroke (1:14.76). Tracey, Michelle Horner, Gorki and Niessl won the 11-12 girls 200 free relay (1:52.49) and the 200 medley relay (2:05.13). Sarah Guyett scored 154 points to win the Women's Open Division High Point Award. Sarah won the 100 back (1:01.06), 200 back (2:11.94), 100 fly (1:01.37), 200 fly (2:18.06), 200 IM (2:14.52), and 400 IM (4:41.79). Meredith Bannon won and set new team records in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.91) and 200 breaststroke (2:29.73). S. Guyett, Paige Mellars, Kat Munson and Brittany Hunter won the 200 free relay (1:48.06). Guyett, Bannon, Munson and Hunter won the 200 medley relay (1:57.05). Bradley Mitchell cored 148 points to win the Men's Open Division High Point Award. Mitchell won the 50 free (22.32 - Sectional cut), 100 free (48.33 - Sectional Cut), 100 breaststroke (1:00.60), 200 breaststroke (2:10.64), and 200 IM (1:58.86). Brad Thornton scored 138.50 points to win the third place High Point Award. Brad won the 100 fly (53.39) and 400 IM (4:14.50). Ryan McKenna placed first in the 200 back (2:01.76). Artie Maier, Mitchell, Clifton Cazes and Thornton teamed up to win the 200 free relay (1:31.35). McKenna, Mitchell, Thornton and Maier won the 200 medley relay (1:43.30). Finally, Colleen Powers scored 142 points and won the 8-under girls second place High Point Award. Colleen won the 25 back (19.72), 50 fly (45.75), and 100 IM (1:35.57). The team of Martha Slivka, Powers, Olivia Olinger and Wendy Woeckener won the 8-under girls 100 free relay (1:11.67). Woeckener, Lauren Perschetz, Powers and M. USA-Swimming Top 16 Three swimmers from the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins placed high in the USA Swimming National Age Group Top 16 Rankings for the 2001-2002 short course season. Tristan Hastings of Somers, who is now thirteen, ranked second in the USA in the 11-12 boys 100 yd backstroke (56.70) and 200 back (2:00.39). He finished fourth in the 50 back (26.68), seventh in the 200 individual medley (2:07.06), tenth in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.61), and 12th in the 400 IM (4:36.21). Fifteen-year-old Bradley Mitchell, also from Somers, placed third in 13-14 boys 100 breaststroke (58.93), fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.45), ninth in the 200 IM (1:57.77), and 16th in the 400 IM (4:13.34). Teammate Simon Hammer, of Bedford Hills, placed ninth in the 13-14 boys 100 breaststroke (1:00.62), and 13th in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.68). Three Marlins relays also ranked among the fastest in the USA for 2001-02: Adam Powell, of Pound Ridge, Hastings, Anthony Simco, of Pound Ridge, and Daniel Simco, of Pound Ridge, earned a fourth place ranking in the 11-12 boys 200 medley relay (1:52.48) and in the 400 medley relay (4:09.94). The same quartet finished the season with a sixth place ranking in the 11-12 boys 200 freestyle relay (1:42.34). |

The "Eastern Zone" is made up of twelve local swimming conferences: Adirondack, Allegheny Mountain, Connecticut, Middle Atlantic, Maryland, Maine, Metropolitan, New England, New Jersey, Niagara, Potomac Valley and Virginia. This elite three-day meet was held March 27-29 at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell, New Jersey. Bradley Mitchell won the 15-18 boys 100 yd breaststroke with a personal best and Top 16 consideration time of 58.27. Brad placed second in the 200 breast (2:08.20 - Top 16 consideration), second in the 200 Individual Medley (1:57.57), and fourth in the 400 IM (4:11.38). Caren Guyett finished third in the 400 IM in a team record time of 4:35.30 (Speedo Sectional Time). Caren also placed third in the 1650 freestyle (17:36.41). Her 1000 yd split in that event was also a Marlins Team record (10:42.42). Sarah Guyett placed second in the 15-18 girls 100 backstroke (59.77), fifth in the 200 back (2:09.54), in the 400 IM (4:36.94 - team record), and in the 200 IM (2:12.30). Meredith Bannon finished in sixth place in the 15-18 girls 100 breaststroke (1:08.41 - team record). Thirteen-year-old Tristan Hastings placed second in the 13-14 boys 100 back (54.83 - Top 16 Consideration), third in the 200 back (1:57.81 - Top 16 consideration), fifth in the 200 IM (2:00.74) and eighth in the 400 IM (4:22.30). Ryan McKenna finished third in the 15-18 boys 200 back (1:58.06), sixth in the 100 back (55.89), and seventh in the 1650 free (16:57.82). Ali Polhill placed fourth in the 10-under girls 50 butterfly (30.50). Age Group Championships The Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins participated in the 2003 Metropolitan Swimming Age Group Championships. The northern section of the championship was held recently at the Valley Central Natatorium, near Montgomery, New York. The three-day meet was hosted by the Viking Aquatic Club. Winners in the Age Group Division were: 10-Under: Sara Blacker (girls 50 & 100 yd freestyle), Roxy Rappaport (girls 100 Individual Medley), Benjamin Gebauer (boys 50 back), Chris Lattarulo (boys 50 butterfly), and Ryan Stern (boys 100 fly). 11-12: Erin Carr (girls 500 free), Giancarlo Pécora (boys 50 free), and Nick Charriez (boys 50 breaststroke). 13-14 girls: Alison Whelan (50 free, 200 backstroke), Brittany White (100 free). 15-18 girls: Kristen Kosits (200 back). 9-Under Meet The younger swimmers of the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins participated in the Middies Nine and Under Invitational. The one-day meet was held at the White Plains YWCA. Wendy Woeckener, of Pleasantville, finished second in the 7-under girls 25 yd freestyle, 25 backstroke, and 25 butterfly. Lauren Perschetz, of Armonk, finished first in the 25 breaststroke, while Sydney Gordon, of Bedford, placed second in the same event. Colleen Powers, of Chappaqua, won two events in the 8-under girls division: the 50 back and the 100 individual medley. Colleen took third in the 50 fly. Martha Slivka, of Pound Ridge, placed second in the 50 back. Brigid Reilly, of Pleasantville, took third in the 50 breaststroke. Maddy Berkman, of Briarcliff Manor, won three events in the 9-year-old girls division: the 50 free, 50 back, and 50 fly. Maddy placed second in the 100 free. Swim At Speedo Champions Series The 2003 USA-Swimming Speedo Champions Series was held recently at the Nassau Aquatic Center Goodwill Games Complex, at Eisenhower Park, in East Meadow, Long Island. More than eighty team from the Northeast participated in the four-day competition. Nine members of the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team attended the event. Clifton Cazes, of Thornwood, finished 12th in the men 100 yd breaststroke (1:00.36) and 14th in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.98). Somers resident, Bradley Mitchell, finished 10th in the men 200 breaststroke (2:12.18). Bradley also swam the bonus final in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.11) and 400 individual medley (4:18.25). Brad Thornton, of Hastings-On-Hudson, swam in two bonus finals: the 100 butterfly (personal best 52.69) and 200 IM (2:00.07). Leading off the 400 freestyle relay, Brad qualified for the Speedo Series in the 100 freestyle (48.46). Lowell Byers, of Chappaqua, swam the bonus final in the 100 free (47.48 - personal best). Lowell also swam a personal best time in the 50 free (21.54). Ryan McKenna, of Armonk, swam the bonus final in the 200 backstroke (1:59.02). Meredith Bannon, of Putnam Valley, swam the 100 breaststroke in a 15-over team record time of 1:09.02. Tara Flaherty, of Hastings-on-Hudson, participated in the 50 free. Sarah Guyett, of Yorktown, swam the 100 & 200 back and the 400 IM, while her sister Caren competed in the 100 and 500 free. McKenna, Mitchell, Thornton and Byers finished in eleventh place in the men 400 medley relay (3:35.08). Qualify For Metropolitan Zone Team The Metropolitan Zone Team Qualifier Meet took place recently at the Lehman College APEX Aquatic facility in the Bronx. Twelve members of the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team qualified for the 2003 Eastern Zone All-star Short Course Championships. The top two finishers in each event qualified for this prestigious meet that will be held March 27-29 at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell, New Jersey. Two sets of siblings will lead the Marlins at this elite competition. Caren and Sarah Guyett, of Yorktown, are making their second trip to the Zones. Thirteen-year-old Caren qualified in the 13-14 girls 200 yd freestyle (1:57.01 - Speedo series qualifier) and 400 individual medley (4:45.92). Her older sister, Sarah, will represent the Marlins in the 15-18 girls 100 (59.52) & 200 (2:08.66) backstroke, and in the 200 (2:12.82) & 400 IM (4:39.07 - team record). Sarah's times in the 100 & 200 back and 400 IM qualify for the Speedo Champions Series. Ali & Drew Polhill, of Brewster, will also swim at Zones. Ten-year-old Ali is making her first trip to Zones. She qualified first in the 10-under girls 50 butterfly (30.29 - team record - NAG Top 16 consideration) and in the 100 fly (1:09.80). Her brother Drew, 12, his making his second trip to Zones. Drew qualified in the 11-12 boys 200 back (2:24.45) and in the 100 IM (1:06.21). Kim Tracey, of Sleepy Hollow, is making her second trip to Zones. Kim qualified in the 11-12 girls 50 back (29.33) and 100 back (1:03.53). Tara Flaherty, of Hastings-On-Hudson, qualified in the 13-14 girls 100 breaststroke (1:10.05). Meredith Bannon, of Putnam Valley, will be swimming in the 15-18 girls 100 breaststroke. She qualified with a time of 1:08.98. Dakota Gordon, of Bedford, is making his first trip to Zones. Dakota qualified in the 10-under boys 50 fly (31.25) and 200 IM (2:34.61). Kazu Asaga, of Chappaqua, will also compete for the first time. Kazu qualified first in the 11-12 boys 50 free (26.17) and will also swim the 100 free (58.30). Thirteen-year-old Tristan Hastings, of Somers, will attend Zones for the third time. Tristan qualified in six events: the 13-14 boys 100 back (55.89), 200 back (1:58.23), 100 breaststroke (1:05.28), 200 breaststroke (2:19.98), 200 IM (2:01.94) and 400 IM (4:21.40). Another Somers resident, Bradley Mitchell, will swim at Zones for the fifth time. Bradley qualified in four events: the 15-18 boys 100 breaststroke (59.48), 200 breaststroke (2:10.81), 200 IM (1:58.31) and 400 IM (4:12.63). All four times qualify for Speedo Champions Series. In his final year of eligibility, Ryan McKenna, of Armonk, will swim the 15-18 boys 200 back. Ryan won the event in a personal best and Speedo Champions Series qualifying time of 1:55.53. |

Marlins Show Team Spirit For many years they tried, and they cheered, but other teams kept on wining the award. So they tried even harder this year, and finally, the coveted "Team Spirit Award" was theirs! The Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins brought home the trophy they won at the 2003 Metropolitan 8-Under Championships. The two-day meet was held recently at SUNY Stony Brook in Long Island. Not only did the Marlins win the Team Spirit Award, they also set two Metropolitan records, three team records, and won six High Point Awards. The team of Danny Caiola, Aaron Blacker, Charlie Carr and Will Rappaport set a new team record in the 8-under boys 200 yd freestyle relay (2:21.40). Rappaport, Blacker, Caiola and Carr set new team and Metropolitan records in the 100 (1:10.83) and 200 (2:40.90) medley relays. The same foursome also won the 8-under boys 100 free relay. Aaron Blacker, of Mount Kisco, scored the maximum of 120 points and received the first place high point award in the seven-year-old boys division. Aaron won six individual events: the 7-under boys 25 and 50 butterfly, 25 and 50 breaststroke, 25 freestyle and 100 individual medley. Stephen Shine, of Briarcliff Manor, scored 90.50 points to qualify for second place high point in the seven-year-old boys division. Stephen placed second in the 7-under boys 50 & 100 free and third in the 100 IM. Alex Rosen, of Armonk, won the 7-under boys 50 and 100 free. He placed third in the 25 free and 25 breaststroke. Will Rappaport, of Pound Ridge, scored 110 points on his way to the first place high point award in the eight-year-old boys division. Will won the 8-under boys 50 free, 50 back, and 100 IM. He placed second in the 25 back and 100 free, and third in the 25 free. Danny Caiola, of Katonah, scored 108 points. He was awarded the second place trophy in the eight-year-old boys division. Danny won 8-under boys the 25 & 50 fly, and the 25 free. He placed third in the 50 & 100 free, and the 100 IM. Luke Salvatore, of Bedford, won the 6-under boys 25 breaststroke. Corie Levine of Bedford Hills and Heidi Gspurning of Yorktown tied for the third place award. They both scored 84 points in the 6-under girls division. Heidi placed second in the 25 breaststroke. Corie placed third in the 25 free and 50 back. Kayla Brooks took third place in the 6-under girls 50 free and 25 breaststroke. Lauren Perschetz placed third in the 7-under girls 25 & 50 breaststroke. Sean Lyons was second in the 7-under boys 25 back and 25 fly. Henry Simon took third in the 8-under boys 50 breaststroke. Attend Senior Metropolitan Championships The Mt. Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins Senior Team participated in the 2003 Senior Metropolitan Short Course Championships. The four-day meet was held recently at the Lehman College APEX in the Bronx. With twenty-six teams scoring in the meet, the Marlins finished in eighth place overall (534 points). Thirteen-year-old Caren Guyett, of Yorktown, placed tenth in the 1650 yd freestyle with a team record and Speedo Championship Qualifier time of 17:45.04. While swimming the mile, Caren split her fastest 1000 free (10:45.62 - team record). She placed 19th in the women 1000 free. Sarah Guyett, of Yorktown, finished 13th in the 100 backstroke, 14th in the 200 back and 200 individual medley, 18th in the 400 IM and 23rd in the 100 butterfly. Meredith Bannon, of Putnam Valley, placed eleventh in the 100 breaststroke while thirteen-year-old Alyssa Potter, of New Fairfield, placed 21st in the women 200 breaststroke. Lowell Byers, of Chappaqua, placed 12th in the men 100 free, 13th in the 50 and 200 free, 14th in the 100 fly, and 18th in the 100 back. Ten & Under Marlins Win Combined Team Award In spite of The Blizzard Of 2003 which delayed the conclusion of the meet by two days, the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs Of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team made waves at the Metropolitan Junior Olympic Swimming Championships. The meet was held in mid-February at the Lehman College APEX in the Bronx. The Marlins 10 and under scored 804 points to win the Team Combined Award. The 11-12 age group finished in fifth place while the 13-14 placed second. Scoring a total of 149 points, Ali Polhill, of Brewster, won the 10-under girls High Point. She placed first in the 50 yd butterfly (31.67) and 100 fly (1:09.39 - team record). Ali finished second in the 500 freestyle, 50 backstroke, and 200 individual medley. She placed third in the 50 and 200 free. The team of Katie Underwood, Ali Polhill, Maddy Berkman, and Taylor Scilufo finished first in the 200 medley relay. Dakota Gordon, of Bedford, placed second in the 10-under boys 200 IM and third in the 100 IM. Connor White, of Pound Ridge, placed third in the 50 breaststroke. Matthew Karle, of Mount Kisco, was third in the 100 breaststroke. The team of Gordon, Karle, Jamie Mitchell and John Carr won the 400 free relay. Qualify For Junior Olympics Twenty-nine members of the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins qualified in extra events for the 2003 Metropolitan Junior Olympics. The swimmers made their additional cuts at the 2003 Metropolitan Silver Championships that were held recently at the White Plains YWCA. The three-day meet was hosted by the Middies Swim Team. The qualifiers in the 10-under age group were: Aaron Blacker (50 fly), John Carr (50 Breaststroke), Sabine Holmes (200 free), Jamie Mitchell (200 free), Justin Potter (100 & 200 free, 50 & 100 back), Will Rappaport (50 fly), Melissa Trail (200 free & 50 back), and Maria Trujillo (100 back, 100 & 200 free). Pentathlon The Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team traveled to New Haven, Connecticut, to participate in the Westport/Weston Water Rats 2003 Pentathlon. The two-day meet was held January 11-12 at the Southern Connecticut State University Natatorium. The Marlins 9-10 girls placed six swimmers in the Top 12 finishers, all of which received a trophy. Alexandra Gorki, of Chappaqua, swam all five events in a cumulative time of 3:22.24, which made her the first place winner with the lowest amount of time. She won the 9-10 girls 50 yd butterfly, 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, and 100 individual medley. She also placed second in the 50 backstroke. Kimberly Holden, of Mount Kisco, placed second (3:35.34). Kim won the 50 back and placed third in the 50 fly. Ali Polhill, of Brewster, finished in third position (3:36.02). She placed second in the 50 fly, and third in the 50 free. Haruka Tanaka, of Pleasantville placed fourth (3:39.73). Haruka was third in the 50 breaststroke and 100 IM. Maddy Berkman, of Briarcliff Manor, placed ninth overall (3:48.08) and Katie Underwood, also of Briarcliff Manor, finished eleventh (3:48.89). Set Metro Record At Holiday Classic XVI One hundred members of the Mount Kisco Based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team traveled to New Jersey to compete in the Holiday Classic XVI Swimming Championships. More than 1678 athletes from New England, Middle Atlantic, Potomac Valley, and the Metropolitan Area participated in this year's championships. The three-day meet, hosted by Eastern Express Swim Team, was held at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center of Rutgers University Bush Campus, in Piscataway, New Jersey. The Marlins finished in second place overall with 2,131 points; the YWCA Middies placed first with 2,535.50 points and Magnus Aquatic Group of New England finished third with 1,907.50 points. The Marlins 10-under swimmers led their respective age groups and placed first among the 55 teams: the girls scored 463 points and the boys 492 points. The 10-under girls team of Kim Holden, Alexandra Gorki, Ali Polhill and Christina Quaranta won and set a new Metropolitan Swimming record in the 200 yd Medley Relay for the second time this season. Their team record time of 2:07.81 qualified for National Age Group Top 16 Consideration. The same quartet of Gorki, Holden, Quaranta and Polhill won, set a new team record and qualified for NAG Top 16 Consideration in the 200 freestyle relay (1:58.73). Gorki, a ten-year-old girl from Chappaqua, won three events, set four team records, and qualified for National Age Group Top 16 Consideration in three individual events. Alex won the 10-under girls 50 breaststroke (34.75 - NAG Top 16 - Team Record), the 100 breaststroke (1:15.90 - NAG Top 16 - Team Record), and the 100 individual medley (1:08.62 - NAG Top 16 - team record). She placed third in the 200 IM (2:32.92 - team record), fourth in the 50 & 100 free, and fifth in the 200 free. Ali Polhill won the 10-under girls 50 butterfly. Her time of 31.26 was a team record and qualified for NAG Top 16 Consideration. The Brewster resident placed third in the 100 fly (1:12.61 - team record), sixth in the 50 free, and eighth in the 500 free. Holden, a resident of Mount Kisco, finished third in the 50 back, sixth in the 100 backstroke, and seventh in the 100 fly. Haruka Tanaka of Pleasantville placed fifth in the 50 breaststroke and Aly Jaquith of Briarcliff Manor finished seventh in the same event. Kim Tracey of Sleepy Hollow finished seventh in the 11-12 girls 50 fly and Brewster' Steffi Niessl placed third in the 11-12 girls 50 fly. Fourteen-year-old Meredith Bannon won the 13-14 girls 100 breaststroke in a team record time of 1:08.15. This time qualifies Meredith for the Speedo Champions Sectional series that will take place in March at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. Meredith also placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke (team record 2:30.74 - Sectional Qualifier). Thirteen-year-old Caren Guyett, of Yorktown, finished third in the 13-14 girls 100 free (54.00 - Sectional qualifier), and sixth in the 500 free. Tara Flaherty took second place in the 13-14 girls 50 free with a Speedo Champions series qualifying time of 25.19. The team of C. Guyett, Bannon, Mary Kate Baumann and Flaherty set a new team record and qualified for NAG Top 16 consideration in the 200 medley relay (1:54.56). Flaherty, Michelle Lian, Hayley Perelman and C. Guyett set a new record in the 400 free relay (3:45.45). C. Guyett, Bannon, Alyssa Potter and Flaherty set a new team record in the 400 medley relay (4:10.33). Hammer and Carr qualified for NAG Top 16 as they won the 200 medley relay (2:13.65). Noah Hammer, of Bedford Hills, won the 10-under boys 50 fly in a NAG Top 16 consideration time of 29.70. Another thirteen-year-old, Daniel Simco of Pound Ridge, placed sixth in the 200 back. Holiday Meet The Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs Of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team held their Annual Holiday Meet at the beginning of December. Thirteen teams from the New York Metropolitan area and Connecticut participated in the two-day event at the Trotta Millennium Pool. Danielle Sims, of Armonk, won the six events she swam at the meet. She placed first in the 8-under girls 25 yd freestyle (15.03), 100 free (1:14.85), 25 backstroke (18.85), 25 breaststroke (20.96), 50 back (39.67), and 25 butterfly (17.11). Alexandra Rota, Wendy Woeckener, Martha Slivka and D. Sims won the 8-under girls 100 free relay. Olivia Olinger, Helena Rosen, D. Sims and Colleen Powers won the 100 medley relay. Seven-year-old Aaron Blacker, of Mount Kisco, was a double winner in the 8-under boys age group. Aaron won the 25 breaststroke (22.73) and the 25 fly (17.40). Badgers On Sunday, November 24th, the Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team hosted the Badger Swim Club for a friendly Dual Meet. The exciting swim meet took place at the Trotta Millennium Pool. In the 7-under girls, Wendy Woeckener of Pleasantville finished second in the 25 yd freestyle and in the 25 butterfly. She placed third in the 25 backstroke. Lauren Perschetz of Armonk finished first in the 25 breaststroke. Danielle Sims, of Armonk, dominated the eight-year-old girls. Danielle placed first in the 50 free, 50 back, and 25 fly. Chappaqua's Colleen Powers placed third in the 25 breaststroke and 25 fly. The team of Alexandra Rota, Woeckener, Martha Slivka and Sims placed second in the 100 free relay. Holden, Gorki, Polhill and Quaranta set Metropolitan Swimming, Marlins Swimming and Pool records in winning the 200 medley relay with a National Age Group Top 16 consideration time of 2:09.14. Steffi Niessl was a double winner in the 11-12 girls age group. Steffi placed first in the 50 free and 50 fly (29.01 - pool record). She placed second in the 100 IM. Nadine Follini won the 50 back. Distance The Mount Kisco based-Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team hosted a Distance Meet at the Trotta Millennium Pool last November 17th. Thirteen teams participated in the event. Thirteen-year-old Caren Guyett, of Yorktown, won the 13-14 girls 400 yd Individual medley with a Senior Metropolitan qualifying time of 4:50.23. Caren placed second in the 1650 Freestyle (the mile) with a Senior Mets qualifying time of 18:00.83. Steffi Niessl won the 11-12 girls 400 yd individual medley (5:25.24). John Carr placed first and set a pool record in the 10-under boys 500 free (6:30.24). Drew Polhill was a double winner: he won the 11-12 boys 500 free (5:55.13) and the 400 IM (5:15.04). Drew also swam the 1650 free in which he finished with the fastest time for 11-12 boys (20:39.98). Thirteen-year-old Tristan Hastings, of Somers, won the 13-14 boys 400 IM with a Senior Mets qualifying time of 4:27.53. Mini Meet The swimmers 12 and Under of the Mount Kisco Based-Boys & Girls Clubs Of Northern Westchester Marlins Swim Team participated at the Middies Mini & Age Group Meet. The one-day meet was held November 9 at the White Plains YWCA. Seven-year-old Aaron Blacker, of Mount Kisco, won all four events he swam at the meet. Aaron placed first in the 7-under boys 25 yd freestyle, 25 backstroke, 25 breaststroke, and 25 butterfly. Yorktown's Sean Lyons finished second in the 25 back and 25 fly, and third in the 25 free.
